The bell is over two metres tall and chimes every quarter of an hour. Early in the morning you can hear it on the radio: "This is the BBC. The time is six o’clock". And then you hear the deep boom of Big Ben six times. The tower of Big Ben is a symbol of London and of Britain.

Maria Sklodowska was the youngest of five children of władysław and bronisława Sklodowska. Both her parents were teachers.
From an early age, the girl followed in the footsteps of his father, a lively interest in mathematics and physics. After receiving his primary education in the school of J. Sikorska, Maria enters the women’s gymnasium, which he graduated in 1883 with a gold medal. Admission to men’s University of Warsaw she was ordered, and therefore it can only agree on the position of teacher in the flying University. In 1891 she moves to France, where he entered the University of Paris in Sorbonne. There her name will be converted to a French name Marie. Due to the fact that financial support her wait was nowhere, a girl trying to earn a living, in the evenings gives private lessons.
In 1893 she receives a master’s degree in physics, and in the following year, and master’s degrees in mathematics. His scientific papers Maria begins with studies of different types of steel and their magnetic properties.

When her sister got married, she invited Manya to live with them and study at the Sorbonne. It was then that she changet her name to Marie. Marie studied Physics and Maths and got her Master’s degree in both subjects. When she graduated from university, she started research into magnetism. It was at that time she met Pierre Curie, a young scientist. They fell in love immediately and got married. Marie moved to his house and they both started examining uranium and other elements to decide whether they were radioactive. It took them four years to isolate the radioactive source which she named radium. For this, they won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. MOONLIGHT SONATA
(1) It was a cold winter night in the Rocky Mountains. The temperature had fallen well below zero, but it was cosy and warm in the lounge of Forest Lodge, the hotel where Detective Lorna Cummins was spending a holiday. She sat lazily in front of a huge fire.
(2) Suddenly, a desperate-looking man burst in the front door, shook water from his clothes and fell on the floor. It was Harry Lewis, one of the guests at the hotel.
(3) The hotel doctor managed to revive him, and, with great difficulty, Lewis told his story.
(4) "My wife Connie, and I love. loved ice-skating. The full moon is so bright tonight that Connie thought it would be romantic to go skating," he explained.
(5) "We must have skated for about twenty minutes when Connie suggested having a race. She was a better skater than me and skated ahead. I called out to her to stop but she didn’t listen. I couldn’t see her in the dark, but I could hear her laughter. Suddenly, the laughter stopped. Then I saw a big hole in the ice. I think someone must have made it earlier to fish or something. I realised with horror that Connie must have fallen in. — She can’t have seen the hole in the dark, poor darling."
(6) "Calm down, Mr Lewis," said Detective Cummins, touching his wet shoulder gently, "What happened next?"
(7) "I took off my skates and jumped in after her. I tried to find her, but it was no use. I could see a cabin at the edge of the lake, so I shouted for help, but there can’t have been anyone there because no one came. So I walked back here."
"Let’s hope for the best," said Detective Cummins. "She might not have fallen in the hole. but something just as bad could have happened to her."
Led by hotel staff Detective Cummins walked the half mile to the lake and found the large hole in the ice that Lewis had described. His skates were close by but there was no sign of his wife’s body. They made their way back to the hotel in the freezing night, carrying Lewis’s skates.
(8) When he saw the skates, Lewis broke down and sobbed into his hands
(9) "You can stop the acting now, Lewis. I know you’re lying. Tell me what really happened to your wife," said Lorna Cummins.

There are only about 1600 left in the wild and another 200 in captivity. The female panda has an average of only about 7 cubs (baby pandas) in her lifetime. This is why it is extremely important that we protect these beautiful animals. In April 2006. a four-year-old male panda called Xiang Xiang was released into the wild. He was the first panda bom in captivity to be set free. This was more than 40 years after the birth of the first giant panda in captivity. Xiang Xiang, whose name means lucky’, has a radio collar so scientists can follow his movements. When released, he barked like an angry dog and ran towards photographers before heading into the forest! Xiang Xiang began training to be a wild panda from the age of two. He was raised at the Panda Centre in the Wolong Nature Reserve where more than a hundred pandas live (more than half of the pandas in captivity!). Xiang Xiang’s habitat training began in a five acre open space. He later went to a much larger area that was more like a natural panda habitat. There, Xiang Xiang learned to build a place to live and to eat bamboo. He started to become aggressive towards humans and make noises like a wild panda. Also, his health improved and he began to have more energy. The area around the Wolong Nature Reserve is the largest giant panda habitat in the wortd. Scientists will work out how many more pandas can live in this area, then they will release that number into the wild. Xiang Xiang was released into the western end of the Wolong Nature Reserve. There, he may meet other pandas. However, will they befriend him or not? If they do, then in the future pandas will be released in eight or ten different locations. The plan is to double the number of pandas in the wild by releasing around 15 each year. Conservationists hope many more pandas like Xiang Xiang will be released back into their natural habitat. However, the giant panda’s habitat has been shrinking more and more due to deforestation for wood and farming. This is the greatest threat of all to pandas. For this reason, the Chinese government has decided to protect 28 natural areas. They have also set up centres like the Chengdu Research Base. This research base started with six pandas whose habitat had been destroyed. Today it has 33 and they plan to reintroduce some of them to the wild in the future. It is important to breed pandas and to release them into the wild. However, protecting their habitat is the most important step. This is the only way to make sure they survive.

One of the world’s most endangered species, native only to China, are the Giant pandas.
Only 1800 of them remain, with 200 in captivity. It is crucial that we preserve these beautiful animals, especially when you consider that a female panda on average only has about 7 baby pandas in her lifetime.

The question is whether he can make friends with them? If he can, then pandas will be released in up to ten different locations in the future, doubling the number of pandas in the wild by releasing 15 annually.
Conservationists hope that more pandas will be released into their natural habitat, but it has been shrinking due to widespread deforestation, which remains the biggest threat to pandas.

Presently it has 33, and they plan to release some of them in the future. It is important to breed pandas and release them, whilst also protecting their natural habitats. This is the only way they can survive.
